Silhouettes by Augustin Édouart, 19th century

The poster above shows the 1960s plundering the 1830s. The original cut-paper silhouette was sourced from a larger group (immediately below) at the Victoria & Albert Museum. This quaint design-element was then matched to equally quaint typography and soaked in a flower-power color-palette of old gold, violet blue and fuchsia pink.

Augustin Édouart (1789-1861) crafted and sold quantities of distinctive silhouette portraits during a long career in Europe and the United States. Before arriving at his signature style and technique, he reportedly supported himself by fashioning portraits from human hair, but I have discovered no examples. The silhouettes are abundantly preserved.
