Alexander Bassano (1829-1913) trained as an artist in London before opening his first photographic studio there in 1850. He proceeded to earn a great deal of money producing exceptionally crisp portraits of the aristocrats and theater people who were willing to pay his prices. The Bassano firm survived into the 1920s. After it closed, a large archive of glass plate negatives eventually found a permanent home at the National Portrait Gallery.
