Alexander Bassano
Leopold II, King of the Belgians

National Portrait Gallery, London

In Heart of Darkness Joseph Conrad portrayed King Leopold (above) as the absolute culmination of 19th-century evil, via colonial exploitation of the Congo. Conrad's characterization keeps alive the memory of this minor monarch. The king himself (who never read Conrad) went to his grave with no suspicion that his reputation would survive only as a villain.
