Brooch 1840 turquoise, ruby, diamond, pearl set in silver and gold British Museum |
Young Prince Albert, fresh from Saxony, designed brooches shaped as birds paved in round turquoise pebbles and clutching pearls in their talons – this was the Coburg Eagle, an heraldic creature displayed to exalt Albert's Teutonic lineage. Twelve identical copies of this flamboyant object were fabricated as gifts for the twelve noble maidens who supported Queen Victoria's train at her marriage to Albert in February 1840.

The large pear-shaped diamonds above were photographed to emphasize the fact that they do not match. Both are over 50 carats, but the one on the left is several carats smaller than its partner. Curators remark that although the difference is obvious side by side, it ceases to be perceptible when the earrings are worn.
