That these "Roman" statues from the Hermitage were intensively restored in the modern era before going on display is evident simply from their smoothed-out contours. Yet no reader of the museum's descriptions need suspect that these pieces were not dug out of the earth in mint condition with all fingers and toes and locks of hair in place, and identity labels attached. The Hermitage continues to present antique artifacts as they were presented everywhere in the 18th and 19th centuries – each polished pastiche completed with an unambiguous identity.
