Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) was an early American painter who, late in life, turned over his practice to his brother James, his nephew Raphaello, and his sons Rembrandt and Rubens. This dynasty of early American artists was separated in time from the original Rembrandt and Rubens by a span of only about two centuries  very much the same distance in time that separates them from the present day (when no such idealism as theirs is any longer possible).
