Thistledown

First clan of autumn, thistleball on a stem
Between forefinger and thumb,
Known for the seeds
That make a wish come true when the light last of them
Into air blown subsides.

Feathery sphere of seeds, frail brain
On prickly spine,
I feared their dissipation, deeds of this crown aspin,
Words from a high-flown talker, pale brown
Thistledown.

Yet when, bewildered what to want
Past the extravagant
Notion of wanting, I puffed
And the soft cluster broke and spinning went
More channels than I knew, aloft

In the wide air to lift its lineage
Ha! how the Scotch flower's spendthrift
Stars drifted down
Many to tarn or turf, but ever a canny one
On the stem left

To remind me of what I had wished:
That none should have clung, lest summer, thistle-bewitched,
Dry up, be done
– And the whole of desire not yet into watched
Air at a breath blown!

– James Merrill (1959)
