An Upset

Drowsing in bed alone, quite thoughtless of nights
When I didn't, an ominous crack, some loud low snaps
Like river ice breaking up
From the next room (lit still – I hadn't retired)
Swept me out there in time to watch my
Grandfather's table,
One of the pedestal's three
Leonine hips
Disjointed under mounting stress,
Collapse.

It could have been
The old man felled anew
Seen through a thaw
Of pain – struck broadside, banks whose failure
Sent slowly crashing full
Ashtray, lamp, magnifying glass and – no!
Liszt; Les Dieux; The Japanese Tattoo;
Babel's Collected Stories; Last
Poems; Thinking and Writing (boxed together);
Animal Farm; A little Boy Lost – to name just a few.

Whew. A disaster zone
Facing therapy: sandpaper, clamps and glue,
Jetsam and overflow's diversion to shelves
Unbuilt, if not to plain
Oblivion . . .
Another "flood" behind us,
Now to relearn
Uprightness, lightness, poise:
First things – the lamp supposes, prone
Yet burning wildly on.

– James Merrill (1985)
