When the Soviet empire collapsed in the late 1980s Neo Rauch was an East German art student. He still lives in Leipzig, the city where he grew up, but now is an international art star. San Francisco Museum of Modern Art acquired a large oil on canvas just a few years ago – it was my own introduction to this painter. The "works on paper" sampled here were exhibited at the Albertina in Vienna in 2005.
