Vernacular photography (otherwise known as old family snapshots) is now a hot and serious publishing topic. Collecting and disseminating these mostly-anonymous photos seems to me by its nature to be simultaneously a form of celebration and a form of grief – their modern audience is large and appreciative, but the intimate meanings and connections that caused them to be made in the first place can never be recovered.
