On a chilly Friday afternoon in September with fog already obliterating the sun, Mabel Watson Payne in her highest weather-proof spirits took me to our old familiar Chinatown playground. But she did not treat it as old and familiar because her new two-year-old dexterity gave her energy for new tricks and made her proud. Even snack time on the pretend-train (formerly a sitting-down affair, for the most part) acquired gymnastic elements never before witnessed.
