CHROMOLITHOGRAPHY – one of the earliest and most satisfying technologies for large-scale mechanical color reproduction. It faded from the mainstream in the early 20th century under the pressure of cheaper (though less beautiful) printing processes.
These crisp chromos from the past are preserved in the Prints & Photographs collection at the Library of Congress. In the poster immediately below (promoting Coca Cola in 1890) the color scheme looks both very weird and weirdly up-to-date – two shades of green (mint and emerald) against two shades of purple (plum and lavender), with accents of butter-yellow and bronze.
