After gazing at that amazing French settee yesterday (the one upholstered in red) I became preoccupied with what must have been a once-universal European passion for giltwood furniture and fittings. This craft – based on insanely refined woodcarving embellished with gold leaf – endured over the course of several centuries, leaving behind thousands upon thousands of fashionable artifacts. They remain confident to this day of an always-warm welcome at the auction houses, where most of these pictures were produced.
