Self-portrait 1857 |
According to curators at the Metropolitan Museum where these drawings are preserved, Edgar Degas made about sixty surviving self-portraits, all of them during student days and the earliest years of his career. Shortly after leaving the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he drew this one, averting his face from the light.
