| Allegorical Scene in Clouds 1761 |
A small collection of wash drawings by Giambattista Tiepolo (1696-1770) – clan patriarch, style innovator, and present-day darling of art historians. This first segment – with scenes set in the sky among clouds – can be traced to finished motifs and figures in the artist's innumerable surviving ceiling frescoes located all over Europe. The latter group – with figures bound to earth by ordinary mortal gravity – similarly invite comparison to mythical and occult imagery from the artist's many etchings (appearing here tomorrow).
