According to curators at London's National Gallery, "It has been estimated that about 650 to 750 painters were working in the Netherlands in the mid-1600s  about one for each 2,000 to 3,000 inhabitants. In cities the ratio was much higher. Delft had about one painter for every 665 residents, Utrecht one for every 500."
