Wenceslaus Hollar Portrait of a man at age 31 1636 etching British Museum |
Though he was not English, the engraver and sculptor Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677) joined the Royalist cause in the 1640s when the English Civil War broke out. We are told that he fought for the King, was imprisoned by the Parliament, and escaped to the Continent. After the Restoration in 1660 he returned to England, but was unable to recapture his former popularity, and eventually died in poverty.
