Leendert van der Cooghen (1632-1681) was born and died in the Dutch city of Haarlem. He is spoken of in the literature as an 'amateur' artist whose career output was small because he was well-off and did not try to make a living from his work.

The two self-portrait drawings above (one in the Rijksmuseum and one in the British Museum) were both made in the same year, 1653, when the artist was 21 years old. With his gift of facility he must have excited some admiration in a town as image-loving as Haarlem in the 17th century.
