At the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg today there are thousands of pieces of porcelain manufactured in 18th-century France by Sèvres. Catherine the Great was an enthusiastic collector. Her various table services were frequently accompanied by "centerpieces" consisting of figure-groups like the ones reproduced here.
