According to the National Galleries of Scotland, Allan Ramsay's brilliant painting career in Georgian Britain was "cut short" in 1773 after an injury to his right arm.  In 1776 he took his family to Italy, partly in hopes of improving his health, and was able to produce a number of exceptionally beautiful portrait drawings, as sampled here.  Most of the other drawings in this group were also produced in Italy, on earlier study-trips, one in the 1730s and another in the 1750s.
