"[Christ Appearing to His Mother] was ordered by the Compagnia del Santissima Nome di Dio for their oratory at Cento.  [Carlo Cesare] Malvasia listed it among the painter's works carried out in 1630, but it is likely it was commissioned as early as 1628.  The account book records that on 24 April 1630 Guercino received a final payment of 55 scudi from a total of 150 scudi for the picture.  The initial payment must predate January 1629 when the account book was started.  After a period of just over 20 years the damp climate of Cento had wrought its damage and the painting needed some retouching, for which Guercino charged 37 scudi and 2 lire (of which 17 lire was for ultramarine), as noted in an account book entry for 5 September 1653.  In 1796 the French removed the painting to Paris, returning it to Cento in 1816."

"Malvasia cited the picture among Guercino's commissions for 1630, naming the patron as the Duke of Modena.  This was the young Francesco I d'Este, who had succeeded to the title in the previous year.  The altarpiece was destined for the Theatine church of S. Vincenzo, which was begun in 1617 and was conceived as the pantheon to the Modenese branch of the Este family."
