"As soon as Guercino completed work at the Casino Ludovisi, he was commissioned to paint this colossal altarpiece – into which he put all his energies – for the altar dedicated to St Petronilla in St Peter's. On 28 December 1621 he received an advance of 200 scudi; a second payment of 300 scudi on account followed a year later, on 22 December 1622; and the painting was delivered in spring 1623, the date inscribed on the picture itself. In 1730, like other altars in the church, it was removed to the Palazzo del Quirinale and substituted by a mosaic copy by Pietro Paolo Cristofari (1685-1743). Displayed in the Pinacoteca Capitolina, it is alas stripped of its original context and the relationship to the space for which it was created. Always well known, the altarpiece is recorded in all the old sources, guidebooks and diaries of travellers; it was requisitioned by the French in 1797, exhibited in Paris in 1798, and returned in 1816."
