In Amsterdam during 1654 Jan Lievens painted the portrait of Sir Robert Kerr, 1st Earl of Ancram.  Kerr described Lievens in a letter to his son in England – "he hath so high conceit of himself that he thinks there is none to be compaired with him in all Germany, Holland, nor the rest of the 17 provinces."
