Sarah Bernhardt died in Paris on 26 March 1923, only a few months after the death – also in Paris – of the much-younger Marcel Proust, whose writings have continued strongly to reinforce her posthumous prestige. At certain points in Proust's novel Bernhardt is idealized specifically by name, but more often her performances are woven into quasi-fictional Proustian tapestries of mystic adoration.
