The long chain of California missions founded by the Franciscans in the 18th century had mostly decayed through neglect by the early 20th century. But then there was a big movement to spruce them up as tourist destinations. Now they flourish again, though perhaps more as historical than as religious sites. Photos are from the Carol M.
