Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) is today the absolutely most famous Flemish Baroque painter and Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) the second most famous. Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678) is the third most famous Flemish Baroque painter. This fact means that Jordeaens necessarily often figures as an also-ran behind his dominating colleagues. Yet it is also good to remember that Jordaens enjoyed a long and productive career in the bosom of a happy family, and outlived his mentors and rivals by almost forty years.
