Ten Years Later

1717

In the Victoria & Albert Museum there is another group of watercolor fabric designs by James Leman (1688-1745), designs created for the Huguenot silk-weavers who labored in London's Spitalfields throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. The artist was around thirty years old when he made the pattern-models seen here, having worked in the industry since the age of fourteen. In the lower margin of the drawing immediately above he writes, "This figure will do ..."  and instructs the weaver to make fifty yards.
