"Louis XV Frame – The Rococo period came into full bloom in the 1730s.  Frame makers were influenced by the artists Antoine Watteau and François Boucher, both of whom designed ornaments.  The relationship between the picture, its frame, and the setting became very important in the Rococo period.  At its best, the Louis XV frame was a piece of wall furniture.  A common element in this style is a broad ogee rising to the rail and leading to a back scotia.  Ogee section frames have three principal variations.  The first, and most economical, is completely plain or has gadrooning on the rail and a leaf-tip sight edge.  Popular from the 1720s to the 1740s, it was a standard frame for pastels, portraits, and still lifes.  The second, more luxurious, has embellished corners and richly carved cartouches that often give more prominence and balance to large compositions.  The third has a single central cartouche or shell, flanked by pierced scrolls and flowers, and was used for domestic and court portraits of all sizes, including pastels and oils."
