"Like Pordenone, Lorenzo Lotto was involved inextricably with Venice, but his career and the character of his art are still more than Pordenone's attached to provincial places rather then the metropolis.  This is despite the fact that Lotto was almost certainly a native Venetian, born there towards 1480.  He acquired from his Venetian education a mode of seeing that it was possible to learn only in that school, from the example of Antonello da Messina and Giovanni Bellini in particular; this remained an essential  and ineradicable bias of his art.  But beyond this there was no accord between the metropolitan ambience in which he learned and Lotto's temperament, introverted, pietistic, and unstable, and as the years went on they became more divergent from each other.  From the beginning of his career Lotto's more important works were undertaken for the provinces; then, the more his practice and actual residence became provincial, the more his difference from the culture of his native place increased.  Even his provincial practice, however, in general brought him insufficient indications of success."
