"Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo – Veneto-Lombard painter. Born in Brescia, he is recorded in Florence in 1508 and in Venice from ca. 1520; he may have worked in Milan ca. 1532-35. Not a prolific artist, he specialized in paintings of a single figure, normally in half- or knee-length against a distant landscape background. The most striking and accomplished feature of his work is the drapery painting, usually in large blocks of a single local colour minutely modified to depict the effects of different kinds of illumination on reflective materials. Savoldo's selective illusionism is indebted to a study of Flemish art, although his subjects and their poetic tone bespeak the influence of Giorgione. . . . Savoldo's historical importance resides in his probable influence on Caravaggio."
