These drawings are from a group of eighty, bound into an album purchased from a London dealer by the British Museum in 1981. "The first page carries the title, inscribed in brown ink in an eighteenth-century Italian hand: RACCOLTA DI ACCADEMIE DI DIVERSI AUTORI. . . . With one or two exceptions, the drawings are from the seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century Italian school and are largely done in red chalk. To judge from the title-page and binding, the collection must have been assembled around 1700-1720. It is possible that many of the drawings came directly from artists' studios, while others were perhaps made at classes in the Accademia di San Luca, Rome. As many as three-quarters of the drawings are of the seventeenth-century Roman school. . . . At some stage in the album's history a number of the drawings were 'restored' by having their damages touched in with white bodycolour; many of these retouches have now oxidised (sometimes to a bright yellow colour instead of the usual grey-black), giving a distracting appearance to the sheets. At another point in time, perhaps as late as the nineteenth century, a not especially well-informed Italian hand went through the contents, making occasional, repetitive and superficial comments about the drawings, usually in the top right corner of the pages, such as "bella", "buona figura" and the like."
