"According to [art historian Carlo Cesare] Malvasia [1616-1693], in 1615 Guercino painted the mural decorations in the house of Bartolomeo Pannini at Cento, which is confirmed by the date inscribed on one of the frescoes [directly above].  In 1840, when the house belonged to Francesco Diana, 140 frescoes were detached from the rooms, chimneybreasts and stairways and mounted on canvas by Giovanni Rizzoli (1799-1878) and then retouched by the restorer Giuseppe Guizzardi (1799-1861).  A substantial portion eventually passed by descent to Marchese Pio Rosselli del Turco of Bologna, most of which were donated in 1945 to the Pinacoteca of Cento; others were inherited by Francesco Filipetti of Ferrara, who transferred some of them to his house in Venice."

"Most writers have contended that the majority of the frescoes – whose motifs are often based on prints by Antonio Tempesta [as directly above] – are by assistants."
