"Guercino used his own mixed-media method of wall painting, combining a secco fresco with oil colour, which gave him greater flexibility than pure fresco, allowing him, for example, to make changes and revisions that could be more quickly and easily concealed. . . . Given their uniform format and the artist's habit of articulating space by receding planes parallel to the picture surface, the Casa Pannini frescoes are consistently vivid and fresh, and there is no apparent hesitation in the flow of ideas. Despite the vagaries of their condition, they continue to satisfy as subjects of extraordinary originality and poetic force."
