"In 1669, having been recommended as a distinguished portraitist to the Este court, Gaulli was able to study in detail Correggio's altarpieces and frescoes in Modena and Parma.  Immediately thereafter he undertook the most important work of his career: the frescoes and other decorations in Il Gesù in Rome, which occupied him until 1683.  Here again Gaulli enjoyed great success.  Numerous commissions from churches in Rome and its environs, from popes, cardinals and princes followed in its wake.  The most important of these was the commission for the colossal ceiling of Santi Apostoli, which was painted in a relatively short time (ca. 1695)."
