"Born in Rome in 1585, Caroselli did not know Caravaggio personally and is described by Filippo Baldinucci as self-trained and a child prodigy.  Adept in the deceptive imitation of the manner of various other masters, he followed chiefly that of Caravaggio, whose style he is said to have approached as closely as any other painter.  At the age of twenty he visited Florence and at thirty went to Naples.  Upon his return to Rome he obtained various commissions for altarpieces, including one for St. Peter's.  . . .  Caroselli was even more of a technical experimenter than was Manfredi, and was more drawn to the sophisticated pictorial rendering of tactile effects and to appealing chiaroscuro contrasts.  He therefore preferred paintings of small format and delighted in the depiction of all manner of curiosities and in scurrilous whims in which he often exaggerates the effects of modeling to tasteless extremes."
