"The well-trodden path of Roman Baroque studies has left some interesting minor painters of the period by the wayside; one of these is the obscure Giovanni Angelo Canini. A pupil of Domenichino, throughout his career he was active in Rome, except for some brief interruptions. His paintings, principally for Roman palaces and churches, in which he achieved no great distinction, follow closely the style of his master. Giovanni Battista Passeri, his friend and biographer, recognized how Canini's failure as a painter was compensated for by a remarkable talent for drawing which expressed itself from the outset of his career. . . . Passeri, who in his Lives does not normally mention an artist's drawing, does so in Canini's case to criticize his incapability of matching this skill in his painting."
