"The rise to leadership of the Roman school in the first two decades of the sixteenth century had caused two at least of the chief Sienese painters of that time, Peruzzi and Sodoma, to attach themselves to it, the former wholly, the latter partly. . . . Sodoma had been earlier and more effectively Romanized than Beccafumi. The style he had matured in Rome, however, was an imposition of Raphaelism on Sodoma's provincial origins – Sienese, distantly Lombard, and tangentially Florentine – rather than a true assimilation of it. After 1520, when Sodoma's practice became almost wholly Sienese, his acquired Romanism waned, and the personal and provincial bases of his art emerged more strongly. His works of the twenties are still related to his Romanized models, but with only wavering consistency; they refer increasingly to local and to Tuscan models, and their qualities of resemblance to classicism diminish."
