"Church architecture was the primary influence on this early Gothic framing style.  The participation of major architects and sculptors in the design and fabrication of frames became the norm in Italy in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.  The tabernacle frame of the fifteenth century was a simplification of the Gothic style.  The tabernacle frame consists of a pediment, entablature, columns, and predella.  Its design reproduced the architecture of its surroundings.  Tabernacle frames were used for religious images in churches or private devotional areas."
