"Guercino treated the subject of the nude Christ Child standing on a table, blessing with his right hand, in 1629, in a well-known canvas in the Pinacoteca Civica at Cento.  In the present composition of more than 15 years later, the figures are less robust and the palette brighter.  This later treatment of the subject seems to have been popular, and many copies were made from it."

"A painting of 'un S. Pietro che piange avanti la B.V.' is recorded under 1647 by Malvasia, who referred to the patron as 'duca Boncompagni', that is, Ugo Buoncompagni (1622-84), Duca di Sora.  The duke's payment of 120 ducats for the picture is registered in the account book on 6 March 1647.  Soon after, the canvas must have been sent to France, since it was sold in 1682 to Louis XIV by the dealer Alvarez."
