"This [The Visitation, above] and its companion, the Virgin and Child, with the Martyrdom of Sts John and Paul in the Musée des Augustins, Toulouse [below], once decorated the side walls of the Fiordibelli-Giroldi Chapel in Reggio Emilia Cathedral.  The Visitation was intended to occupy the left-hand wall, as the . . . contract stipulates, and with good reason the Virgin walks forwards to the right, in the direction of both the altar and the source of light within the chapel."

"[Both pictures were seized by the French in 1796.]  The Visitation was exhibited in Paris from 1798 until 1801, when it was sent to Rouen.  Like other paintings taken from Italy and sent to French regional museums, it was not among the works returned to Italy in 1815.  [The Virgin and Child, with the Martyrdom of Sts John and Paul] was exhibited at the Louvre and then in 1812 was sent to Toulouse.  Like The Visitation, it, too, did not make its way back to Italy in 1815."
