Tapestry with Figures
She, with her aging cavalier
Beside her, in a world aflame,
Walked gravely through the dying year,
And all was golden where they came. . . .
And she must praise (and he must hear)
The thing he knew by another name.
This turning of the leaf to gold,
Shining and still and poised in air:
Here was their golden story told. . . .
Or overtold; – that turning, there,
Was turning from the touch of cold,
The poise was poise for going – where?
Now, leave them as they are: The year
All golden, and the cavalier,
And she beside him, still, and dear. . . .
– David Morton (1944)
