"Antonio Gherardi settled in Rome in 1658, studying with Pier Francesco Mola and Pietro da Cortona. Among the first works of Gherardi's independent career are designs for an engraving illustrating the thesis of Abbate Giovanni Antonio Altemps and for a series of six prints representing the life of St. Martina. After traveling in northern Italy, Gherardi returned to Rome, where he undertook a steady succession of commissions for churches and noble patrons."
