"Giovanni Battista Carlone (1603-1684) was the son of Taddeo Carlone (1543-1613), a sculptor and historical painter at Genoa.  Giovanni Battista, like his older brother Giovanni Bernardo (1590-1630), was educated under Domenico Passignano (1559-1638) at Florence.  Together the brothers undertook large fresco projects in Genoa and elsewhere.  The chief result of their united exertions is to be seen in the cathedral of the Guastato at Genoa.  After the early death of Giovanni Bernardo, this work and others were completed by Giovanni Battista.  Later, he accepted numerous independent commissions in Genoa and across northern Italy.  Giovanni Battista is considered superior even to his brother in design and in the delicacy of his tints, with the same brilliant effect of colouring.  Novel and copious in his compositions, his figures are of the most graceful contour, his heads expressive of every variety of animation and beauty, with a vagueness, lucidity, and brilliancy of colouring that astonishes and charms.  The painters of this name are numerous in the Genoese School.  Giovanni Battista had twenty-four children by his wife Nicoletta Scorza, and several of his sons painted."
