"Giuseppe Chiari was born in Rome in 1654, the son of a native Florentine; beginning in 1661 he became a student of Carlo Maratti, whom he diligently copied.  His successful debut in S. Maria del Suffragio brought him further commissions, both from Roman patrons and from foreigners visiting Rome, among whom the English began to assume an important role toward the end of the 17th century.  Chiari hardly ever left Rome.  He worked tirelessly in his Marratiesque style and, despite his weak physical constitution, lived to a ripe old age, dying in Rome in 1727.  He was perhaps the most faithful of Maratti's pupils.  He relates to his master in a manner similar to the relationship of Ciro Ferri to Pietro da Cortona.  The highest renown of both painters lies in the the fact that their best works may be confused with those of their own masters.  What otherwise distinguishes Chiari's style is the weak and dull quality of his colors and the exaggerated use of broken and iridescent tones."
