"Born in Rome of Lombardic extraction, Odazzi was a student of Giovanni Ferri and later of Giovanni Battista Gaulli, becoming his favorite collaborator and totally absorbing his style. Odazzi's earliest works thoroughly reflect the manner of his master. The artist later became more independent, but in the process lost much of the painterly merits of his prototype. He was one of the most active painters in Rome around 1700, especially as a painter of frescoes and altarpieces. His works are of quite uneven quality: 'one might praise him more if he had painted less' (Pascoli). . . . Despite virtuosity of ability, Odazzi did not succeed in attaining a passionate impetus or an impression of swirling action equivalent to Gaulli's achievement; his work is lacking in the compelling rhythm of linear movement and the magical fluidity of imagination."
