"Born in Genoa, Giovanni Battista Langetti was orphaned at an early age and raised in the family of painter Giovanni Battista Carlone. Langetti and Carlone are both documented in Rome shortly after 1650, working within the orbit of Pietro da Cortona. During the second half of the 1650s Langetti moved to Venice, frequenting the workshop of another Genoese painter, Giovanni Francesco Cassana. Langetti was quickly accepted in Venice as a leading tenebrist artist and settled there for the remaining two decades of his short life. He specialised in easel paintings with images of Biblical heroes, prophets, half-nude Titans and philosophers – attuned to the neo-Stoic culture then current in the Veneto – further emphasising their expressive and tragic aspects through the use of intense chiaroscuro."
