"Born in 1624 in Pistoia, Baldi was a student of Pietro da Cortona in Rome after 1647. From the 1650s onward, following the recommendation of his master, he took part in various important commissions such as the frescoes in the Gallery of Alexander VII in the Quirinal Palace. Thereafter Baldi was one of the most active painters of religious subjects in Rome and central Italy. He attained no great independence as an artist; he stands very close in style to Ciro Ferri, but without Ferri's versatility and adaptiveness. In his draftsmanship, especially in the treatment of drapery, Baldi is typical of the latest phase of the Cortonesque style. He was but little gifted in regard to his coloristic-painterly talents. In his more mature work the influence of Carlo Maratti is also very evident."
