Wreck
In the train wreck my pieces of life
Were sidewise laid to track, river, and hill,
Were sidewise laid to track, river, and hill,
Crosswise and palpable
To canyon and cliff.
The damage was, many later could surmise,
Insured, probable, and full of reason,
But crosswise stalled in the grave my greatest passion
Was surprise, surprise.
– Josephine Miles (1911-1985)
