"These leaves, I did not merely behold them with the eyes of my memory, they interested me, touched me, like those purely descriptive pages into which an artist, to make them more complete, introduces a fiction, a whole romance; and this work of nature thus assumed the sole charm of melancholy which was capable of reaching my heart."

– Marcel Proust, from Albertine Disparue (1925), translated by C.K. Scott Moncrieff as The Sweet Cheat Gone (1930)

"I was not content to contemplate this foliage merely with the eyes of memory. It interested and moved me as do those purely descriptive pages in whose midst an artist, in order to make them more complete, introduces something fictional or a whole novel; and thus this natural scene took on the only melancholy charm which could touch my heart."

– Marcel Proust, from Albertine Disparue (1925), translated by Peter Collier as The Fugitive (2002)

(What Scott Moncrieff achieved was a fair approximation of Proust's native rhythm, a continuous glide down the smooth stream of consciousness.  Later renderers into English, erecting their signposts every few paces, distrust their readers and break up that flow.  Even when their claim to greater verbal accuracy is valid, their production remains too dull and jarring to engage attention, much less belief.)
