"In 1531 and 1532 Romanino had the opportunity to return to work on a major scale as a frescante. In those years he was engaged at Trento in the decoration for Bishop Bernardo Clesio of the Castel Buonconsiglio, working concurrently with the brothers Dossi (and with the lesser Marcello Fogolino). Romanino's extensive work in the Clesian palace resurrects the brilliant fluency of touch which he had shown earlier in fresco at Cremona and now, finally – the result of study in particular of Pordenone – his fluency does not merely work in the description that the brush makes of the forms but infuses them essentially. What Romanino shares with Dosso (who just at this moment was tending towards a Giulian Romanism) is not more than the liberty inspired by the secular subjects of the decoration; he is untouched by the new classicistic accent of his collaborators."
